One of my favorite places in Montana is the Mission Valley near St. Ignatius. I think Glacier National Park provides the best mountain views and backdrops in the Rockies, but in terms of mountain views in front of a place where you can put a house, the Garden Wall near St. Ignatius is my absolute favorite. So much so that I am seriously considering it as a place where I will invest in property and build my first house. I took note awhile ago that there were no wedding venues in this area, until Rugged Horizon came into the picture this past year. Fortunately Kate and Chris contacted me in their first year because my photography represented what they were looking for. They aren’t a formal couple and just wanted a good portrait of their day with their family and friends.
Serendipitously their wedding happened on a day with very dramatic weather and at a time in the wedding season after I’d been practicing reflections to the point of perfection. At my previous wedding near Bigfork with Audrey and Aaron I was able to play with a reflective surface and finally make a masterpiece in the forest, but I longed to get something cleaner with nothing but clouds. On Kate and Chris’s day the obvious photo to take was in front of the unbelievable mountains to the east, which we did plenty of. But once that scene had been properly exhausted I took out my experimental gene and was finally able to create the version that looks like they’re floating on clouds.
